Inside,
on the ground floor of the Film Museum, is the
Cafe Vertigo. After working hours, around six
to seven in the evening, the place is mobbed -
no
matter what day it is. Ordering a drink takes
a bit of perseverance as everyone crushes up against
the counter waving guilders at the hassled bartender.
After a while you learn that standing there waiting
your turn is useless and you either join the fray
or slink out with your thirsty tail between your
leg. If the weather allows, you can take your
drink outside and sit at a table underneath a
giant Chestnut tree that serves
as a canopy. There you can observe small groups
of young men and women on roller blades stumble
over themselves as they try to hold simultaneous
conversations on their cell phones. Even so, it's
a wonderful place to sit and watch the sun set
over the Vondelpark lake with a foaming glass
of Grolsch as company.
